August's Devotional Lesson
(Disciples of Christ)
Jackson Boulevard Christian Church
A Christian family on vacation in a strange city one hot July morning took their young
children shopping for groceries and to mail letters home. The city was congested and
loud, but they trudged through the heat stopping occasionally to complete their
shopping list while dutifully following their map.
Their shopping adventure was going great, as they moved from the bakery, grocery
store and drugstore, but the post office wasn’t where the map showed it to be.
Thinking that they had gone in the opposite direction they turned around not really
knowing where to go. As the sun grew hotter their small child became fussy and the
parents frustrated. In the midst of the unfamiliar territory they spotted a church and
stepped inside to God’s coolness.
Inside the church they found peace and coolness as they knelt in prayer, they asked
for God’s help to find the post office. Refreshed they looked up once more to the cross
and read the inscription, "My peace I give to you”.
As they stepped back outside, their spirit was refreshed but more importantly the noise
and heat was squelched by God’s inner peace. And, yes they found the post office.
Anytime life starts to beat down their spirit, they can think back to that day in the little
church far-away when they took the first open door to Christ, paused for one moment,
closed their eyes, felt the presence, and peace of God in their hearts.
Oh Lord, in the busyness of our day, we know that you hold an open door for peace in
the midst of our daily storms.
Behold the kingdom of God is within you ~ Luke 17:21
